This film freaking rules! Well first off – the opening is ok up to the point where the gang banger starts beating up on Michael Angarano for hanging out with “those chinks in yellow town”…first off I didn’t know south Boston was so racist and second I didn’t know gang bangers took karate. My big issue with the opening was that is was SOOOOOO 90’s: kid is introduced; kid gets challenged or beat-up; kid goes on fantastic journey learning to fight; kid comes back and kicks ass. The opening just seemed so much like 2nd unit or less important stuff that it really showed and kind of depressed me. But my depression quickly turned to elation once Angarano gets sucked into the Forbidden Kingdom. I thought (here’s confirmation) I had read somewhere that Jet Li was done making kung fu movies, but it’s very easy to understand why he would come back for this film….double cast as the Monkey King and a reclusive monk on a quest to revive the Monkey King, I’ve never seen Li have so much fun with a role. The Monkey King is all fun and always smiling as he kicks ass. It’s beautiful. Jackie Chan is phenomenal as the Drunken “Immortal” who’s elixir is alcohol and Angarano DOES ALL HIS OWN STUNTS!!!! It was freaking awesome! I’m so happy that we have an up-and-coming line-up of movie stars who stretch and actually work at honing their craft*. I highly recommend this film because it is truly phenomenal.
* Shia LeBouf is another actor who has avoided the old trap of no work and drug overdoses by willing to make sacrifices in order to hone his craft. I don’t know for a fact that this has happened to Macauly Caulkin and Haley Joel Osmond, but knowing the story of Bobby Driscoll will always give me pause when it comes to child actors….
