11.22.63 (2016)

OOOH! I just found out that this adaptation is being made. I *really* enjoyed the book and since this is technically a TV adaptation, I have high hopes for it not sucking like Dreamcatcher did (especially since I also really enjoyed the TV adaptation of Dead Zone). And that J.J. guy does good work, too. :-p

How to embed Facebook videos in WordPress

Believe it or not, this seems surprisingly unclear at first blush! Or maybe that isn’t too surprising considering how often Facebook changes the rules. :-p The first thing you/Google think to try is just to embed it directly. [embed width=”123″ height=”456″]https://www.facebook.com/DisneyAulani/videos/961137040599463/[/embed] But that doesn’t work because WordPress doesn’t support direct embeds from Facebook (again, not too surprising).* The next suggestion from Lord Google is to copy/paste the Facebook embed code and post that directly in the post (it’s HTML code so we have to make sure to use Text mode instead of Visual mode). <div id=”fb-root”></div><script>(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_PI/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3″; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));</script><div class=”fb-video” data-allowfullscreen=”1″ data-href=”/DisneyAulani/videos/vb.147898618589980/961137040599463/?type=3″><div class=”fb-xfbml-parse-ignore”><blockquote cite=”https://www.facebook.com/DisneyAulani/videos/961137040599463/”><a href=”https://www.facebook.com/DisneyAulani/videos/961137040599463/”></a><p>Uncle prepares for Fall at Aulani!</p>Posted by <a href=”https://www.facebook.com/DisneyAulani”>Disney Aulani</a> on Day o&#039; the Moon, Septembarrr 21, 2015</blockquote></div></div> But that doesn’t work. Hmm. We can’t … Continue reading →

Scott Adams goes Inside Out and a Geographical Oddity

Build a Habit-Robot in your Brain (from Scott Adams’ Blog) I find myself further and further fascinated with Scott’s musings, but this one was especially poignant given the number of “what’s going on inside their head” things that I’ve encountered this year (Disney Pixar’s Inside Out and Kristen Anderson-Lopez/Robert Lopez’ Up Here!).   Where the Palm Meets the Pine (from A Geographer’s Scrapbook) This was a fascinating article to read that was randomly posted in an internal work email and something I’ll have to remember to keep an eye out for next time I’m driving north!

ICS file Timezone Formatting

I recently RSVP’d for an event that allowed me to add the event to my calendar via ICS file. But the file was somewhat crudely constructed and made no mention of what timezone the event was in, so I suddenly had a VERY early Sunday morning event to contend with (which would never do lol). Being something resembling a web developer, I immediately tried looking at the source code of the ICS file to see what was going on. It loaded fine in my favorite plain-text editor (TextPad) and the problem was immediately clear — there was an absolute dearth of any timezone related information in the file. I tinker-toyed with the idea of just adding PDT to the end of the DTSTART and DTEND lines, but then decided – for the sanity of my calendar app – to do a precursory search for proper formatting of an ICS file. Who knows, … Continue reading →

Swingin’ Bolero

The other night I was listening to (one of) my new favorite Internet streaming stations (KCEA 89.1 FM) when I heard a song that was hauntingly familiar. Just before it ended, I realized it was a big band arrangement of Maurice Ravel’s Bolero (a song that I’ve had great love for ever since I first saw the stage show Blast!). Agog, I quickly ran some Google searches to locate the song. I started with “big band adaptation of ravel”. The third hit (Swing, Swing, Swing: The Life & Times of Benny Goodman from books.google.com) contained the following quote: “Fletcher’s ambitious, extremely imaginative adaptation of Ravel’s Bolero”. So I moved on to a search for “Fletcher Henderson bolero” which confirmed that it was Benny Goodman’s orchestra playing the track I heard (which, given Henderson and Goodman’s many collaborations should hardly have been surprising). Lastly, I searched YouTube to locate a recording … Continue reading →

Making Internet Memes (Series 2, Episode 1)

So, my dad is kind of super talented and his accomplishments are popping up on Facebook more and more. Today, I finally realized what needed to be added to any future accomplishments: that moment from Robin Hood (1973) where Toby Turtle’s father is participating in Prince John’s archery contest and Toby cheers his father on with an enthusiastic “Yay, Dad!” Surprisingly, there is apparently no meme in existence for this concept (at least based on the following limited attempts at Google image searches), so I decided to create one myself! Google Search for robin hood disney yay dad meme Google Search for robin hood yay dad Here’s the final product (which my dearest wife was able to complete far more competently and efficiently than I would have been able to): If your dad does something similarly awesome, feel free to use that URL/image to praise their achievement! 😀
