It’s my life and I’ll do what I want with it!

San Diego Zoo

Pictures.  Guided tour bus. I film the bus tour to glean facts in review. I’m low on all my batteries, so I am a little upset, but not terribly. After tour, I head to tiger river, don’t see any tigers and continue exploring. 10:30 hits and I head back to the entrance and Wegeforth Bowl for the first show (11 am). Sea lions and wolves…cool. Then I think about taking the skyway to get to the 12 pm show across the park. Lines too long and I don’t have enough time, so I walk through Fern Canyon to get there. I arrive 15 minutes early and enjoy my peanut butter and bosenberry jelly sandwiches which I made myself (I’m an adult! I made my own lunch!). Snope-ing myths about rare animals…interesting. I take the back way out of the amphitheatre and end up at the Giraffe exhibit. I meander through … Continue reading →

First Sea World Solo Trip

Welcome…I’m gonna start blogging here more consistently, especially this weekend as I explore San Diego by myself. Now normally, it’s not a big deal to go somewhere by yourself, but this is a bit of a milestone for me because I’m a kinesthetic driver, which means I only really know how to go someplace if I get myself there. You drive me somewhere in a car, I’m reading a book and listening to my iPod (which a man in Amsterdam told me was bad *) so I have no idea where you’re taking me. Day 1 of my San Diego Weekend: It’s A Sea World Afternoon (pictures here) I got off the 5 freeway at Sea World Drive at around 2:15, having made remarkably good time (I left Irvine at 1:00 pm) and pulled up to Sea World. No one was at the parking kiosks, so I assumed they did … Continue reading →

Pirates of the Caribbean Returns

So as part of my preparation for my trip to Amsterdam, I was up at 6am yesterday. Not knowing what else to do that early, I headed to Disneyland for the grand re-opening of Pirates of The Caribbean. The Esplanade at 7:17 am. There was a family scuttling from one letter to another doing that photo collage that EVERYBODY does. Nicely done with the F. The Esplanade at 7:54 am. Nice line to get into the park. Park opened at 8:00 dull, and people start running. Security guard says, no point, the line for pirates is already 2 hours. The 2 hour line, stretching from the flag pole all the way down Main Street… Through Frontierland… and straight into the ride. Apparently I missed the new mural in the lobby that features Jack Sparrow. Oops. The ride was lots of fun. A lot darker than I remember it…which of course … Continue reading →

Renewing Your Passport And New Language

So I renewed my passport today. I got in just under the wire, as it takes 6 weeks to get a new one and my flight leaves Friday, June 29th (8 weeks from today). My dad and I are going to Amsterdam via New York via Toronto via New York via Kansas City via Los Angeles. Why the long legs? The Toronto leg is two fold: Niagara Falls (missed it on my first New York trip in 2002) and the new Lord of the Rings Musical. I’m wary, but I’ve read several articles and it looks like fun. Definitely worth the trip. While in New York we’re going to check out Spamalot, since Steven Wynn is a bastard (he landlocked the West Coast with a contract for a SHORTENED VERSION that will only play in Vegas in a new theatre he’s building…damn youse!). To get to New York from Los … Continue reading →

What Will You Be Remembered For

What Will YOU Be Remembered For? – February 28, 2006 I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about Dick Cheney’s hunting accident. In itself, the incident is nothing special and the media is fixated on it for no reason (oh wait, they’re not fixated anymore). Anyways, I told my friend about what somebody said about the guy Cheney shot (wish I could remember where I heard/saw it, it’s driving me nuts): this is what he will be remembered for. His obituary title will not be, “Loving father and dedicated crusader of justice dies at ??” but “The man Dick Cheney shot in a ‘hunting accident’ dies at ??”. I in turn brought up the point that Al Michaels will be remembered for being traded for a cartoon character in his obituary. Wait…maybe I stole this verbatim from a radio show I heard. I can’t even tell … Continue reading →

Thanksgiving In Vegas

So what did I do for Thanksgiving Weekend. Got a haircut. Went to Vegas and created art by being hung upside down and slammed into a canvas covered in paint. No I wasn’t drunk, no I didn’t lose a bet (I’m still too young to gamble!)…I was a participant in the Blue Man Group show at the Venetian. So here’s what happened. A Blue Man selected me randomly out of the audience and brought me up on stage. They helped me into a plain white jumpsuit, placed a blue mark on my cheek (think Indian war paint) and put a blacked out motorcycle helmet on my head. Then they led me off stage and covered the jumpsuit with blue paint (rather roughly I might add). Then they attached a rope to my leg, hung me upside down and slammed me into a canvas. And then they pulled me out of … Continue reading →

Mr Heat Miser

Mr. HeatMiser If you didn’t know it by now, I’m a big fan of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They’re part of the Neo-Swing revolution, but I don’t even really understand what’s going on. I just like swing music. According to Scotty’s Road Journal (he’s the lead guitarist/vocalist): Next up, MR. HEATMISER, is by far the surprise song on the CD for me! This song comes from a Rankin & Bass Claymation holiday T.V. special from the early 70’s called “The Year Without Santa Claus” (you might be more familiar with their classic version of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer). The story is silly, but it had a song in it about two brothers, Mr. Cool miser and Mr. Heat miser. The song they sang stuck with me for years. I brought the tune to the band during rehearsals and Josh worked on the arrangement right up until we recorded the … Continue reading →

Lights Camera Action

I just saw Rent for the first time in my life…even though I already knew the story and all the lyrics. See the summer before 9th grade (1999), I participated in two productions with Musical Youth Artist Repertory Theatre, aka MYART. I got involved with the group because the director/producer taught drama at my middle school. The two shows I did (The King and I, Annie) were my first real introduction into the world of musical theatre. Yeah there was that thing in 97 where the entire family did a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, but that doesn’t really count because I was in the kid’s chorus. So here I am this freshman punk hanging out with a bunch of high school kids…and what was a big phenomenon in 99 for musical theatre high school rebels? That’s right…Sweeny Todd. No you idiot, it was Rent. So we … Continue reading →

Passionada De Jeremy Bob

This rant begins with my praise for the National Tour of Oklahoma, recently closed at OCPAC (Orange County Performing Arts Center). The show was good. The costuming was less silly and more gritty than earlier productions, indicating a shift from traditional 50’s musical values. The dream ballet was much more interesting because the stars of the show were triple threats and could actually DO the ballet, which was very nice. There was also some very intriguing set design based on perspective. The show opens with miniature sets of the farmhouse, the windmill and the smokehouse, showing where everything is. Then, when they focus on the farmhouse, there was a miniature smokehouse in the distance, or vice versa. And during the transition to the train station, a miniature train rode across stage, which was just fun. The only other notable mention goes to Jud Fry and Ali Hakim, who both did … Continue reading →

Twitterpated

Nearly everybody gets twitterpated in the springtime. For example. You’re walking along, minding your own business. You’re looking neither to the left, nor to the right. When all of a sudden, you run smack dab into a pretty face. WHOO WHOO! You begin to get weak in the knees. Your head’s in a whirl. And then you feel light as a feather. And before ya know it, you’re walking on air. And then you know what? You’re knocked for a loop! And ya completely loose you’re head! And that ain’t all. It can happen to anyboy. So you’d better be careful.   Now what better way to look at relationships then through the eyes of a semi-psychotic yet well-meaning cartoon owl. Not the one that eats the Tootsie Pop in 3 “licks”, but the one from the Disney Animated Feature, Bambi. This is his speech on “love sweet song (pain … Continue reading →
