The moving picture industry has had a profound effect on me.

Anchorman

Funny, funny stuff all over this movie. That would be the best description of this film. Only one joke wasn’t very funny because it was a Bush-bash, but I forgive them because it was such a funny, funny movie. The movie tells the story of one reporter’s discovery that men are no longer the dominant species…and the ensuing chaos. It’s the best of the 70’s and the revolution of the ladies. (If this is sounding really stupid, that’s because it is.) Brick Tamland: I’m Brick Tamland. People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I enjoy ice cream and a nice pair of slacks. Years later, a doctor will tell me I have an I.Q. of 48 and that I am considered mentally retarded. Steve Carell is a funny, funny man. The usual gang is all here: Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson and Ben … Continue reading →

The Bourne Supremacy

Reminiscent of the original film for me. The movie was filmed mostly with a handheld with enhances the jerky reality that Jason Bourne inhabits. I wasn’t sure what I was getting when I looked at the trailer and the movie pleasantly surprised me. Lots of fun, but most of the twists are easily spotted. Interesting choice of ending. The car chase was the most realistic and violent car chase I have ever seen. I LOVED IT!!! It’s better than the chase in Matrix Reloaded only because this was a non-sci-fi chase/movie. There are a couple of “unbelievabilities”* leading up to it, but I’m willing to suspend disbelief for a freaking awesome car chase. 1) How can a guy who can take out someone in a moving car not hit a guy slowly walking away. 2) How can a car still be intact after the chase? I mean, Damon practically totals … Continue reading →

I Robot

This movie was fun. Almost as fun as Riddick. I really enjoyed the futuristic look and all the high tech equipment (parking garage and the freaking ROBOTS…they were awesome). People have complained about the cookie cutter plot, and how it’s really simplistic. I think they enhanced a simple plot (just like they did with Dodgeball) with elements of a mystery story. What I mean is the movie felt (especially through the music) like a mystery. The music, by the way, was great fun. Our hero has to figure out who killed Dr. Lanning (James Cromwell) but then there’s a twist, kind of thing. Will Smith and Bridget Moynahan were wonderful. Especially Will’s monologue about his robot paranoia. The special effects? Get out of here! They were awesome. Sonny’s performance rivals Gollum/Smeagol’s (they used the same technique, guy in a blue suit, with facial imitation). I really liked Sonny (he’s the … Continue reading →

Dodgeball

Everybody knows that the underdog wins in the end and this movie is no exception. What sets it apart from the others is it’s comedy. They had me in the first 30 seconds. “We at Globo Gym know that fatness is genetic … like balding or necrophilia.” But that was just the beginning…the movie only got funnier. The tournament is hosted by the ADAA-The American Dodgeball Association…of America Stephen Root and Gary Cole back together again (Office Space), even if they never have a scene together, it’s a note-worthy affair Cameos included – Hank Azaria, Lance Armstrong, Chuck Norris, William Shatner, David Hasselhoff, and Lori Beth Denberg (the kid from All That) Vince Vaughn’s deadpan everyman played well against Ben Stiller’s psychotic exercise freak Pepper Brooks and Cotton McKnight – Gary Cole’s firm charm stands up well under Jason Bateman’s bouncy insanity The tournament is broadcast on ESPN 8, “The … Continue reading →

King Arthur

This movie was really good. I kind of got lost in the details of the whole scenario (i.e. who’s what breed, who’s related to who), but the movie moved along fine without all those details (I just get stuck on details). One distinction that needs to be made now is that the movie is not an adaptation of T. H. White’s “The Once and Future King”, nor a re-telling of the Arthur legend, but the “real story” behind the legend. It’s the story of a half-Roman, half-British general named Arthur leading a group of Russian (Sarmatian) mercenaries in an epic battle against time and the unstoppable Germans (Saxons) who are invading Britain (for the first and only time). He does get help in the final battle from the Woads, who are basically all the ancient Celtic tribes mushed together for movie-goers sake (according to a Keira Knightley interview). Speaking … Continue reading →

Spiderman 2

Before we begin…The trailers made me really happy. Not only was there a full-length Catwoman trailer, a new (or simply re-edited) I, Robot trailer, AND a trailer for Blade: Trinity, there was a trailer for a movie I really look forward to…Skipping Christmas, which is one of John Grisham’s non-legal books and looks really fun with Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis as the leads. Location, location, locationI saw the midnight showing on opening day at Big Newport (aka Edwards Newport 6) which has the biggest non-IMAX movie screen on the West Coast. The ambience there is incredible because everyone is there to have a great time and they are all fans, so there is lots of cheering for the hero and lots of peanut gallery comments, which only enhances the viewing. This IS the one…As I’ve lamented around here before, several movies so far have attempted (through their seductive … Continue reading →

Passionada De Jeremy Bob

This rant begins with my praise for the National Tour of Oklahoma, recently closed at OCPAC (Orange County Performing Arts Center). The show was good. The costuming was less silly and more gritty than earlier productions, indicating a shift from traditional 50’s musical values. The dream ballet was much more interesting because the stars of the show were triple threats and could actually DO the ballet, which was very nice. There was also some very intriguing set design based on perspective. The show opens with miniature sets of the farmhouse, the windmill and the smokehouse, showing where everything is. Then, when they focus on the farmhouse, there was a miniature smokehouse in the distance, or vice versa. And during the transition to the train station, a miniature train rode across stage, which was just fun. The only other notable mention goes to Jud Fry and Ali Hakim, who both did … Continue reading →

Shrek 2

This movie rocked! I laughed my ass off a million and one times during this movie. I was only unsatisfied with the lack of Dragon in the film which was explained away at the beginning when Donkey said she was moody. I just didn’t buy that. But beyond that, the film was wonderful and full of all sorts of amusing references, from fairy tales to pop culture. Aside from the main characters who returned from the original film, new characters included: the King and Queen of Far Far Away (John Cleese and Julie Andrews), Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas), Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders), and The Ugly Stepsister (Larry King). The movie begins right after Shrek 4-D (the new attraction at Universal Studios) and after the honeymoon of Shrek and Fiona. They arrive home to find Donkey and an invitation to a Royal Ball in the … Continue reading →

The Chronicles Of Riddick

“I hope you’re not afraid of the dark…” This movie, by far, is one of the most fun times I’ve had at the theatre in a long time. I can’t recall the last time I had that much fun at a movie. Sure I loved Around the World and the Terminal (see yesterday’s review), but this movie was really enjoyable. I didn’t look at my watch the whole time I was so immersed. It was a good thing I watched Pitch Black before seeing it because it is a very effective and fun introduction to Riddick and the dark future he inhabits.* The movie begins approximately five years after the events of Pitch Black with a voice-over by Dame Judi Dench explaining the Necromongers quest for the underverse and their leader Lord Marshall (portrayed by baddie and great actor Colm Feore) as they annihilate another planet. We then move to … Continue reading →

Around The World / The Terminal

As if being fortunate enough to receive free movie tickets wasn’t enough, I have to go and waste my time on a second film. See, when you arrive three and a half hours before the free movie starts you have two options: 1) go have a pleasant meal, read a book, then attend the free movie OR 2) grab a snack, rush into one movie then hurry out and into line for the next while scarfing down a theatre hot dog. Guess which one I chose. In truth, the only problem I had with these movies was that I really had to pee. But enough about me… time for some facts. This movie was absolutely wonderful. My major complaint from the trailer was the shift in Fogg’s character from sensible banker to flighty inventor and that damned flying machine. But watching the movie and Steve Coogan’s performance, I thought the … Continue reading →
