These aren’t so much reviews as contemplations on the subject matter. What I loved, what pissed me off, what intrigued me, what I disliked, what made me think, what made me beg Google for answers.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Century 20 @ Bella Terra, Huntington Beach, CA

Lot of fun, lots of action… Yay Ryan Reynolds! Sure he’s only there part of the time, but he’s very funny and sarcastic…basically my kind of guy 😉 Yay Gambit! Sure he’s a pre-pubescent punk, but he’s got a N’awlins accent, throws playing cards and fights with a quarterstaff…what’s not to love? And of course yay Hugh Jackman and Liev Schrieber!! Two great actors who really embody their characters, able to express the animal rage at the core of the savage Sabretooth and the wicked Wolverine.

Earth – AMC 14 @ The District, Tustin, CA

I saw this film in it’s opening week for three reasons: 1) I was excited by the trailer – James Earl Jones! 2) I wanted Disney to plant a tree with my ticket purchase 3) I wanted to support the brand new DisneyNature label (essentially a production house for Disney’s True Life Adventures) Between the first viewing of the trailer and my viewing of the film, a negative thought was introduced into my head regarding this maiden voyage of DisneyNature (primarily from this MousePlanet review): that the film was simply a poor, disjointed summary of BBC’s Planet Earth miniseries (which was and still is a fantastic promo for the beauty of hi-definition television sets). Obviously this wasn’t enough to make me not see the film, but it definitely clouded my idle thought. I agree the film is slightly disjointed and prone to take liberties with narrative jumps, but the story … Continue reading →

Rent: The School Edition – Corona Del Mar

Very polished preview. Only one stop per act. Really good caliber performances from the leads…even by non-high school standards. Obviously they can’t say f***. The big problem song obviously is La Vie Boheme: They can say masturbation but they can’t say erection? They can’t say dyke. They jumped a section with lyrics right before the talking interlude…marijuana? Roger is phenomenal and this is his first onstage performance ever! He’s a sophmore varsity football player and he’s got a really good voice. 30 hi-quality cordless mics! Fancy LED footlights and high end lighting throughout! Really good show! Check it out before the protests shut it down!

Bronzeville – The New LATC

Delightful straight play about an African American family that moves to California after the Japanese internment of the 1940’s, allowing them possession of an interred family’s house with one caveat…a young American man from that Japanese family has evaded internment by hiding in the attic! Now this family must adjust to this new surrogate family member in a situation akin to the plight their culture found itself in before Emancipation…a desperate struggle for freedom against an oppressive government. Meet the Goodwins: Patriarch Jodie, leading his family West from Mississippi to Los Angeles; His grandmother Janie, the aging matriarch and reigning chef of the house; His brother Felix who won’t be forced into the military just because the family has a history of fighting for a country that doesn’t recognize their rights…he just wants to play jazz; ….

12 Rounds – AMC Westgate 20, Glendale, AZ

The advertisments all highlight the fact that this is a film from the director of Die Hard 2 (which to me is the more lackluster of the quadrilogy) and the producer of Speed (eh), but it’s basically the plot of Die Hard 3. Not to say this is a bad movie…it’s very exciting and terse and enjoyable. John Cena gives a very enjoyable performance (in my opinion not as good as Dwayne Johnson, but not bad for his second tour of the leading man position…The Rock was a little stiff in The Scorpion King) as Officer Danny Shaw, a beat cop in New Orleans who gets dragged into a sadistic terrorist’s 12 round game where the rules are solve the puzzle or people die.

Avenue Q – OCPAC

Yay! We got Brian Benoit (the original Trekkie Monster, et al.)! I was lucky enough to see him AND John Tartaglia when I first saw the show in Vegas (before it was trimmed down to 90 minutes), and it’s awesome that he loves doing the show so much that he’s now on the national tour. Great production. Obviously I can (and will) complain about things, but first and foremost, I had a great time! Why didn’t the orchestra play the final hit of “My Girlfriend Who Lives In Canada”? Rod was even sitting there waiting for it?!?!?! Why were lyrics cut from “Schadenfreude”? Straight-A students getting B’s? Ex-es getting STD’s? Watching tourists reading maps? Seeing doormen taking naps? CEO’s getting shackled? Watching actors never reach the endings of their Oscar speech? Brian and Christmas Eve didn’t say that they sold all their wedding gifts for money… Why didn’t the ensemble … Continue reading →

Race To Witch Mountain

Can you judge a franchise film without being familiar with it’s predecessors? Can a film stand on it’s own regardless of it’s origins? Who am I to judge…I enjoyed this movie very much, despite (or thanks to) having never seen the original Witch Mountain movies (released in the late 70’s by the Walt Disney Company). Dwayne Johnson is a very capable action comedy hero (don’t go in the pimped out fridge Jack…), and I very much enjoy his acting. Carla Gugina once again gets to have fun in a supporting actress role (from Spy Kids to Watchmen, she just keeps working it on screen…). Anna SophiaRobb (Bridge To Terabithia, Because Of Winn-Dixie) is joined by newcomer Alexander Ludwig as insensitive-but-loveable aliens on a mission.

Brsinger – Christopher Paolini

Delightful! Although I find rather disturbing the amount of parallels I continue to spy between the Inheritance cycle and the original Star Wars trilogy (at least plot wise)…especially during the recap of the first two books at the beginning. Part the First: Farm boy’s boring life explosively interrupted by exciting worldly politics; Story about an ancient race of peacekeepers with magical powers that died out due to betrayal leading to the current oppressive regime; Farm boy’s surrogate parent(s) killed and farm boy runs from danger with the town’s storyteller; Storyteller reveals he is one of the surviving peacekeepers and begins to train farm boy in their ancient ways; Storyteller is killed by primary henchman of the evil leader; Cocksure stranger aids the farm boy in his quest to join the rebellion, but wants nothing to do with the rebellion himself; Farm boy and stranger rescue princess from primary henchman’s headquarters; … Continue reading →

42nd Street – Rose Center for the Performing Arts

Great individual performances, horrible combination. Great sounding tracked orchestra. Oscar was a real piano player with bad hair (not period hair I mean), and also played weird interludes during the barfly scene. Speaking of that scene, Abner Dillon wasn’t heavyset with a handlebar mustache, so he was a cobra and a hick instead of cobra and a walrus….boo! Although the theatre was well used because they had a balcony set piece for Dorothy’s hotel room. And speaking of the balcony, they cut the doctor scene at the top of Act 2 and opened with Sunny Side (To Every Situation)…what the deuce! And the worstest part is after Sunny Side they ran up to the other balcony where they could have done the damn doctor scene!!!! WTFH!?!?!?!!!! Just doesn’t make any damn sense… Oh! And they mixed up Shuffle Off To Buffalo! Traditionally, Bert Barry gets married to Anytime Annie and … Continue reading →

Watchmen

Things I Missed From The Book Death of Hollis Mason (what, Stephen McHattie is too cool to kill?) Doctor Manhattan’s line on Mars: in a minute you’re going to tell me you’re sleeping with Daniel Lori and Comedian flashback “only once” Despite those missed moments, I didn’t have as many mixed feelings against this movie as I did Harry Potter 3 (which I guess is a good thing…I got pretty upset with Potter 3 more on adaptation issues than anything else). I didn’t mind the changed ending: unless you’re going to make a four hour epic instead of a three hour epic, there’s no way you could actually do the book’s ending…they did what they had to in order to make the movie work and I accept that. What they were able to accomplish with the movie was quite spectacular. Tim over at CAD.com said it best when he calls … Continue reading →
