These aren’t so much reviews as contemplations on the subject matter. What I loved, what pissed me off, what intrigued me, what I disliked, what made me think, what made me beg Google for answers.

America Alone – The End of The World As We Know It by Mark Steyn

This book details how the world is becoming increasingly Muslim and that America is one of the few bastions of freedom left. Birth rates across Europe are declining. Europe is full of socialist states that have high taxes to fund the social security pensions that the old expect. But with low birth rates, these states are forced to rely on immigrant labor and taxes for their benefits. The only people immigrating to Europe are Muslims. Muslims birth rates are exploding. Europe needs the immigrants, so they cow tow to aggressive Muslims who want infidels dead with laws and regulations that force women into burkas, etc. One part of the book that really hit me (especially after the Political Sciences course I just took) was an exploration of Dick Cheney’s post 9-11 quote, “One of the things that’s changed so much since September 11 is the extent to which people do … Continue reading →

Ocean’s Thirteen

I really enjoyed this movie. I just kept reflecting on how they took this simple concept (11 guys led by Ocean robbing multiple casinos) and turned it into this great con trilogy. Could they not afford to pay Julia Roberts or Catherin Zeta-Jones anymore? Did Al Pacino take all their salary? The Thirteen (there seemed to be some confusion about this): The original 11 Danny (George Clooney) Rusty (Brad Pitt) – why does he always get the worst hairpieces? Hilarious. Linus (Matt Damon) Basher (Don Cheadle) Yen Virgil and Turk Malloy (Scott Caan and Casey Affleck) Reuben (Elliot Gould) Saul (Carl Reiner) Livingston Frank (Bernie Mac) Roman Nagel (Eddie Izzard) Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) – boy did he just come in for filming for just one day. This trilogy plays into the Hollywood pitfall where the pecking order is (by popularity/overall enjoyment): the first one, the third one, the second … Continue reading →

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer – Century 20 @ Bella Terra, Huntington Beach, CA

So I caught the midnight showing of the movie to kind of celebrate the end of my 4th year in college, but I couldn’t catch the midnight showing at Newport 6 (where I typically do midnight shows). Not because it was sold out, but because it didn’t exist! So I ended up at Bella Terra with a packed house and a really decent seat (2nd row, center). Not bad for showing up 15 minutes before show time. Trailers: Underdog looks like fun. I love Jason Lee. August Rush – the trailer left me speechless…must see this film… Hot Rod – a stuntman wannabe who is a bit of a jerk – looks amusing [walks away from an explosion] Man: You’re the worst stuntman ever! Rod: What? Man: [louder] You’re the worst stuntman ever! Rod: No, I can hear you, I’m just being mean. Evan Almighty – I swear to Him … Continue reading →

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End – The World Premiere and The Midnight Showing

Pictures. So last Saturday I went to Disneyland at 6 in the morning. Why? Not to sit and wait all day to see celebrities – to take advantage of an empty Disneyland at 6:30 in the morning. I got several great shots of New Orleans completely empty and had an entire Splash Mountain log to myself (probably the only time I’ve ever walked onto that attraction and had the offer of staying on for a 2nd ride). After that I went to Swing Team Rehearsal with the intention of joining some friends later that day in Disneyland for the Red Carpet walk-by’s. But not before going into Jamba Juice and watching Orlando Bloom walk through Downtown Disney incognitos with a little girl (not his daughter…maybe his niece? No idea). I came back around 5 pm and I’m on the hub right across from Tomorrowland. Unfortunately, by the time the celebrities … Continue reading →

Oh What A Beautiful Morning!

That’s right…I’m quoting Rodgers and Hammerstein. But it really is a beautiful morning…that nice cold morning indicative of spring where you can’t wear a jacket because in another hour it’s going to be hot. If only my sinuses weren’t plugged, I probably would have been able to smell that mountainesque air that I so adore. But anyways, this beautiful morning reminded me that there are several things to share with y’all. I came up with an alternative storyline while watching The Mask the other day. It was right after the scene where Tina (an undiscovered Cameron Diaz) visits Stanley (Jim Carrey) in jail and says she’s going away for a while. I didn’t see or hear from Tina for a couple of months. Dorian succeeded in taking over the city…unfortunately, being a petty thug, his empire quickly devolved into civil war…Lieutenant Kelloway was killed in the resulting crossfire and in … Continue reading →

Shooter and The Punisher (2004)

All the political intrigue and excitement of a John Clancy novel and a great exploration of political corruption at the highest levels. I’ve always enjoyed Antoine Fuqua’s work…then again I’ve only seen Training Day and King Arthur, but they were both thoroughly enjoyable, as was this film. Aside from that, the film was very pretty, highlighting the beauties of…Canada. That’s right….they filmed most of it in Canada. At least that’s what I garner from the credits. The credits thank only the city of Philadelphia and from what I could see not many other places in America. So it makes me sad…because there were some really gorgeous shots in the film and I think it’s a darn shame that the cities it should have been shot in couldn’t out bid Canada. While I’m not a Mark Wahlberg fanatic, I do enjoy his work and he does a very respectable job playing … Continue reading →

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I barely remember the TV show, although it was something fun to watch growing up. I also vaguely played the arcade game with friends when we’d go miniature golfing. That and X-Men. But I digress. The movie had that same kind of fun to it, especially since the character modeling was so exaggerated (stick-thin women, huge muscle-bound guys), allowing for a degree of escapism. What was interesting though was how convincing the “fight choreography” was. It was very cool looking and I enjoyed it. Beyond that the story serves to reintroduce us to the characters and the team dynamic that exists. They deal with their world-threatening problem and leave room for a sequel…or a television show revival. If the show could look that slick consistently, I’d love it, but I’m probably just dreaming. I also wonder why the original theme song wasn’t covered. There was an…interesting rock song with numerous … Continue reading →

Meet The Robinsons

This film was lots of fun. It really lifted me up to see the Disney Company moving in such a positive direction. First: The film is preceded by the classic Mickey Mouse short, Boat Builders. Then there was the Walt Disney Pictures logo AND a Disney Animated Studios logo featuring Steamboat Willie! These two bits tell me good things are around the corner for Disney Animated Feature now that John Lasseter has assumed the Walt Disney figurehead in the company* (i.e. he makes a lot of creative decisions). I remember reading several articles online during the development of this picture where Lasseter stepped in and basically fixed parts of the film that weren’t working. Well let me tell you, it paid off. This film is heartfelt, funny and features incredibly fun characters. It seemed a little predictable to me only because I’m a sci-fi geek and time travel is one … Continue reading →

Bridge to Terabithia (Movie)

If it weren’t for Katy, I probably wouldn’t have read the book before I saw the movie. This movie is what Eragon should have been: an appropriate tribute to the spirit of the book. I guess I can thank David Patterson (son of the author and screenplay). The only thing missing was the sacred grove, and with no length issues for the movie, they should have included it. Oh well, maybe we’ll get some deleted scenes. After I read the book, I watched the movie trailer again and got really worried. I mean, Disney kept selling it as a movie along the lines of Chronicles of Narnia, which is a completely different kind of fantasy story. Bridge to Terabithia is about the imagination of two children, not finding a magic world hidden inside a wardrobe that’s actually a metaphor for Christianity. It’s about keeping your mind open as the world … Continue reading →

Marvin Hamlisch and the Long Beach Symphony Pops!

AND THE UNITED STATES ARMY FIELD BAND JAZZ AMBASSADORS!!!! They played swing music and I had to sit their instead of jumping up and dancing it because no one was able to take up the 2nd ticket. Shoot. So I show up for the event ready for a good time just because I love A Chorus Line (currently playing at the Curtis Theatre in Brea…go see it!) and The Sting. I don’t get a program, take my seat and wait for the show to start. Marvin Hamlisch comes out and tinkles the ivory with “As Time Goes By”, commenting on how memorable movie scores are. He continues with the story of how he got started in the business. He went to Juilliard (never mentioned that he was the youngest person ever to be accepted…he’s a friggin’ prodigy!) and from there played rehearsal piano for Barbara Streisand’s Funny Girl (what’s a … Continue reading →
