Jon Corporate prayer for Paul (worship leader) Men’s Fraternity starting up next Saturday How do you see yourself? I often ask myself this question and wonder who has an an answer for themselves One person answered “I am the son of the living God” How many people actually see themselves first and foremost After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and told the good news that comes from God. He said, “The time has come! God’s kingdom will soon be here. Turn back to God and believe the good news!” As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen and were casting their nets into the lake. Jesus said to them, “Follow me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.” Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with him. Jesus … Continue reading →

Now we move on to the text! Sidebar on Words With Friends (za and whiz) Luke 14: 1-6, then 7-14 I’m a nerd, we could dissect everything, but not everybody’s that way, so we’ll just get into the meatier stuff One Sabbath, when Jesus went to share a meal in the home of one of the leaders of the Pharisees, they were watching him closely. A man suffering from an abnormal swelling of the body was there. Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, “Does the Law allow healing … Continue reading →

Paul Jon …. The apostle Paul has the audacity to say that even in this I am content I’ve learned the secret of contented ness What if Paul never met Jesus, his life would be pretty awesome Went to a good school, had a good career as a Pharisee Then he met this resurrected Jesus Jesus doesn’t promise the good life, He promises us abundant life What if Paul had told the story from a different perspective, of unaccomplished goals and unfinished plans A story were Paul wasn’t doing so good In 1909 a no longer young woman named Henrietta Sol Founding HADASA, a women’s Zionist group Channeling her unrequited love into something productive and beautiful What if her story had been about getting married to the right man? Do you ever question the good life? Do you compare it with the abundant life that Jesus offers? So Paul says … Continue reading →

Paul Jon Looking at Phillipians 4 Next week Paul’s got a friend coming in from his Gospel signing days Week after that, Maria and I will be talking about contentment V4-14 Be glad in the Lord always! Again I say, be glad! Let your gentleness show in your treatment of all people. The Lord is near. Don’t be anxious about anything; rather, bring up all of your requests to God in your prayers and petitions, along with giving thanks. Then the peace of God that exceeds all understanding will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus. From now on, brothers and sisters, if anything is excellent and if anything is admirable, focus your thoughts on these things: all that is true, all that is holy, all that is just, all that is pure, all that is lovely, and all that is worthy of praise. Practice these things: whatever … Continue reading →

Paul Jon A word in the text Phronesis Will/desire/inner part of us that makes decisions Thinking, acting, feeling But these assets I have come to regard as liabilities because of Christ. More than that, I now regard all things as liabilities compared to the far greater value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things – indeed, I regard them as dung! – that I may gain Christ, and be found in him, not because I have my own righteousness derived from the law, but because I have the righteousness that comes by way of Christ’s faithfulness – a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ’s faithfulness. My aim is to know him, to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings, and to be like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to … Continue reading →

Paul Jon Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. (Philippians 1:27-30 ESV) Also in acts and first Thessalonians So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, and from … Continue reading →
