The theatre. The theatre. What’s HAPPENED to the theatre?

The Producers

A Producer’s Update – The National Tour came around to OCPAC and I got to see the show again. HOORAY! Oh yeah, the original Roger DeBris (Gary Beach) isn’t on the national tour, but I got over it fast. Now some notes… Franz was wonderfully portrayed. Perfect throwback to Kenneth Mars. Biaylstock – He’s no Nathan Lane, but he’s good. Ulla’s accent is too…”heavy” for me. I love Katie Huffman on the CD. It’s nice to see the entire show. I love the pigeons. The singing sounded a little funny? The Blind Violinist was not only a really good mime, but he (the person) reminded me of the grave-keeper from Van Helsing. Count the references – 1) It’s good to be the king; 2) Blind Violinist; 3) Teutonic Twat; 4) What nice guys… November 23, 2003 Well if being in a metro train on my way to an already started … Continue reading →

Passionada De Jeremy Bob

This rant begins with my praise for the National Tour of Oklahoma, recently closed at OCPAC (Orange County Performing Arts Center). The show was good. The costuming was less silly and more gritty than earlier productions, indicating a shift from traditional 50’s musical values. The dream ballet was much more interesting because the stars of the show were triple threats and could actually DO the ballet, which was very nice. There was also some very intriguing set design based on perspective. The show opens with miniature sets of the farmhouse, the windmill and the smokehouse, showing where everything is. Then, when they focus on the farmhouse, there was a miniature smokehouse in the distance, or vice versa. And during the transition to the train station, a miniature train rode across stage, which was just fun. The only other notable mention goes to Jud Fry and Ali Hakim, who both did … Continue reading →

Urinetown

Urinetown The Review, not the place Yes, that’s right. I finally decided to put this page together. It’s just that recently, I’ve noticed that my opinion really doesn’t influence or matter. I mean, who am I put some punk kid who’s only more intelligent than the sheep around us. Well, when I put it in that light, I actually want to keep reviewing things. So here goes! (This is the review of the West Coast tour that stopped through at OCPAC). My memories are fairly fragmented, but I of course loved the show. What sticks out? Certain songs that I really enjoy, Officer Lockstock, Little Sally, Bobby Strong, Harry Hot Blades, and Miss Pennywise the opera singer. In that order, too. The songs I enjoy are: Privilege to Pee – “It’s no way to live, I tells ya. No way ta live!” (Old Man Strong). Cop Song – “Well it’s … Continue reading →

Starlight Express

“Starlight Express, Starlight Express, are you real? Yes or no. Starlight Express, please answer me yes. I don’t want you to go.” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit roller-skating extravaganza has been all over the world (I would know, I’ve seen it in Vegas and London). And it finally came to Orange County Performing Arts Center (OCPAC). I knew it was coming because during previous visits, I would watch this video loop they had of upcoming shows. But I wasn’t all that happy when they showed the Starlight Express preview. Why? Because at one point you see audience members wearing 3-D glasses. You know, the kind you would wear if you went to Honey I Shrunk the Audience at Disneyland, or Shrek 4-D at Universal Studios. You don’t expect that kind of shit to rear it’s ugly head at such an upscale joint as OCPAC (it’s very posh, if you get my … Continue reading →

The Producers

Well if being in a metro train on my way to an already started performance of Mel Brooks The Producers wasn’t bad enough, maybe the abusive and loud African American teens who boarded the train shortly after we (me, my dad, and a friend) did was. I absorbed myself in my GameBoy (Super Mario Bros. 3) but the noise level in the train increased . . . a lot. But that wasn’t the half of it. As I had said, we were late to the performance. While it grieved me to be late and miss even a moment of Jason Alexander (Yea Catbert!) and Martin Short do anything, I was content to arrive in time for my favorite number, Der Gutten Tag Hop Clop sung by the playwright of Springtime for Hitler, the musical within the musical. The show was incredibly funny and energetic, but I didn’t like Roger DeBris, … Continue reading →
